From crisis to change

Withdrawal, perfectionism, control, avoidance or procrastination are old patterns your nervous system uses to protect you. Learn to relieve the strain on it. Only then does change become possible.

Individuals

learn to understand their “triggers” and relieve strain on their nervous system, so they can notice feelings and needs more consciously and express them clearly.

For you, if …

… you react the same way in certain situations despite knowing better, and wonder if something is “wrong” with you.

… you feel tired and exhausted.

Reaction chain
  1. Trigger: what sets it off
  2. Nervous system: state
  3. Emotion: body
  4. Thoughts: interpretation
  5. Feeling: conscious
  6. Action: response
  • The nervous system (2) and thoughts (4) influence each other.
  • The action (6) feeds back into the body and the nervous system (2).
  • The action (6) creates new triggers (1).

Where change begins

  • 2: Regulate the body
  • 4: Examine thoughts
  • 6: Respond consciously

A simplified model for orientation. In reality the steps happen quickly, overlap and influence each other.

What you can develop

  • Recognize your reaction chain. Notice old patterns.
  • Relieve strain on your nervous system on purpose. Notice your feelings and needs again.
  • Widen the space between stimulus and response. Feel your self-efficacy: your energy for life.

Exhaustion as protection

The autonomic nervous system regulates energy according to what the organism judges it can bear. When strain stays high for a long time and no recovery follows, it powers down your resources. You can read this as a protective function: the body puts on the brakes before the system takes serious harm. It is there to make you change your behavior.

Exhaustion as a symptom

Not every kind of exhaustion is a meaningful protection. It can also be a symptom, for example of sleep deprivation, iron deficiency, thyroid problems, depression or infections. In that case, a medical assessment is necessary.
